How To Make Homemade Dog Treats
Making homemade dog treats can be a very rewarding experience for you and your dog. If you enjoy baking this pursuit will come naturally to you. Even if you're not a gourmet chef you can make fantastic home made dog treats. There are all kinds of recipes online and in dog treat cookbooks that guide you step by step through the process. The majority of homemade treats are simple to make and require basic ingredients that can be purchased from any supermarket or grocery store. There are all kinds of treats you can make including chews, biscuits, bones, cookies and many more.
When you are ready to make home made dog treats, the first step is to gather all your ingredients. If you can measure out everything in advance that can help you when it comes time for baking. This is what they do on cooking shows due to time constraints. Of course you can measure as you go, it all depends on which method you prefer. Once you've gathered all your ingredients you should turn on your oven and allow it to preheat. There is no one setting for dog treats, the temperature depends on what you're making. The average dog biscuit will bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or so. However for hard, crunchy biscuits you'll want a temperature of 325 and a longer baking time. Jerky for dogs is made at a low temperature of 180 degrees and baked for several hours.
Step two is to combine all your ingredients. Go by the recipe step by step and do exactly what it says. Some recipes will tell you to mix all the ingredients except the flour, then add the flour gradually. You will want to knead your dough into a stiff ball when making traditional dog biscuits. You may find that refrigerating the dough for thirty minutes or an hour will make it easier to work with. If you have time, this is something you may want to do. When rolling out your treat dough use a floured surface and aim for a thickness of around 1/2 inch.
The cute cookie cutters available these days mean that homemade dog treats can be made to look as good as store bought treats. You can find dog bones, hearts, stars and another adorable shapes. Take the scraps left over, knead them gently into another ball, roll them out and cut more shapes. This will ensure you use all the dough. Your recipe may vary from these directions depending on what home made treat you are making. For some great recipes check out the You Bake Em Dog Biscuits Cookbook by Janine Adams.
