Chicken Jerky Dog Treats
In 2007, when a widespread dog food recall occurred, many top brands of dog food were yanked from store shelves. One of the items removed from stores was chicken jerky dog treats made in China, which were found to contain dangerous contaminants. There were a number of reports of illnesses and death due to this type of dog treat. Does that mean your dog should never eat jerky again? Not necessarily. Although you should probably avoid store bought dog treat jerky there is no reason you can't make it yourself at home.
Making jerky for your dog is actually very simple. Although some people use a meat dehydrator for making jerky you can also use your oven. The first step is to cut raw chicken into very thin strips. Place in 180 degree oven overnight or for at least five to six hours until chicken is dried out and looks like jerky. The chicken should be cooled thoroughly before being served to your dog. These treats can be stored in a plastic bag at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
If you lack the inclination to make jerky yourself, you can shop at a local dog treat bakery where you trust all natural ingredients are being used and sanitary conditions are being followed. One of the largest dog treat bakeries in the world is Three Dog Bakery. In addition to their brick and mortar stores they have a website where you can order their treats and have them hand delivered to your door. In addition to jerky treats there are many other homemade treats your dog can enjoy. Whether you make your own treats or buy them from a bakery they should be made with natural ingredients.
Don't overlook the fact that homemade dog treats, including the chicken jerky dog treats described here, will not keep as long as store bought brands. The reason store bought brands last so long is because of artificial preservatives, which you don't want to feed your best friend. If you enjoy making your own jerky, bones, treats and chews you may want to invest in a dog treat cookbook. A book that will teach you to make healthy and delicious treats for your dog is Doggie Desserts: Homemade Treats for Healthy, Happy Dogs by Cheryl Gianfrancesco.
